AT&T Updating Texting Plans

Starting August 21st, AT&T will adopt new text messaging policies that will include unlimited text for $20 a month.

Current AT&T customers will be able to keep their current plan.  As of right now, AT&T offers 1,000 text messages for $10 a month.  That plan will be scrapped.  The move to unlimited text for $20 a month is not only limited to individuals.  AT&T also will introduce a family plan with up to five phones for $30 a month.

For users unwilling to adopt a text messaging plan from AT&T, the standard rate of 20 cents per message will still apply.  However, AT&T feels that their growing customer base and their insistence on unlimited text messaging plans indicates a needed change.

In a statement released by AT&T about the change, they point out, “We regularly evaluate our offers and are making some adjustments to our messaging lineup…The vast majority of our messaging customers prefer unlimited plans and with text messaging growth stronger than ever, that number continues to climb among new customers”.

This change follows an announcement to reduce the throttle speed of the top five percent of data users.  They promise that the reduction in speed will only account for a small percentage of their base.  Ninety-five percent of their users should not be affected.  The change in the data plan will only be in effect until the next billing cycle.
